St. John’s Anglican Church, Harbour Island Bahamas
The arrival of the Anglican Church can be traced back to the mid-1600s when the Eleutheran Adventurers a group of European Puritans seeking religious freedom arrive. It is rumored that theses Eleutheran Adventurers were two Anglican priests who had left the church, Stephen Painter and Nathaniel White.
In 1670 the English Crown was granted the Bahamas to the Lord Proprietors of Carolina. One of the requirements of this Grant was the establishment of churches in the Bahamas.
It wasn’t until 1768, nearly 100 years after the Eleutherans arrived, that St. John’s Anglican Church in Harbour Island Bahamas was built. This makes it one of the oldest religious structures in the Bahamas.
St John’s Anglican Church in Harbour Island Bahamas is located at the corner of Dunmore and Gaol Street and is recognized by its pastel pink color and magnificent stained glass windows.
St. John’s Anglican Church is open for mass on Sundays at 8 am and 7 pm.
